Switch mobile

Per line, per month, for years.

Mobile is where the numbers get large, because the saving repeats on every line every month. A household of four on a major carrier switching to bundled lines is usually looking at the biggest single change available to it.

The mechanism

The arithmetic is per line, and it compounds

Providers that also sell you home internet price mobile lines well below the big three, because the line is a retention tool rather than the product. Two lines is normally where the difference becomes obvious; four lines is where it becomes the largest item on the household ledger.

Someone using a mobile phone

It multiplies

A $25 monthly difference on four lines is $1,200 a year. Nothing else in the house moves that much.

Keep the handset

Most unlocked phones move networks unchanged. You are switching the plan, not the hardware.

Keep the number

Numbers transfer during activation. Do not cancel the old account first or you can lose it.

Balances can be covered

If handsets are still on installments, some providers pay off the balance. There are conditions, and they matter.

On the call

Have these ready

  1. 1

    Your current mobile bill

Switching credits and savings guarantees are assessed against it.

  2. 2

How many lines, and who uses data heavily

Mixed plans are often cheaper than putting everyone on the top tier.

  3. 3

Handset lock status and outstanding balance

Both decide whether a buyout applies.

  4. 4

Whether you also want home internet

The bundled per-line price generally requires it.

Questions

Before you switch mobile

How much can switching mobile actually save?

It depends on line count. Bundled lines from home-internet providers commonly run $30 or less per line with two or more lines, against $40 to $60 on a major carrier. On four lines that is often $80 to $100 a month, which is the largest single saving most households have available.

Can I keep my phone and number?

Usually. An unlocked, compatible handset moves as it is, and your number transfers during activation. Keep the old account open until the transfer completes.

What is a phone balance buyout?

If you still owe money on handsets, some providers pay off the remaining balance up to a limit when you switch a minimum number of lines and port the numbers in. The limits and conditions are specific, and we read them to you before you commit.

Is the coverage as good?

These plans run on the major nationwide networks rather than a separate one, so coverage is generally comparable. Deprioritisation thresholds differ, which we explain before you pick a tier.
